What is PLA?

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a bioplastic that is produced from plant starches using advanced processes.

It is designed to break down in a commercial compost environment without turning into persistent microplastics.

Why PLA?

Petroleum-based expanded foams, such as Expanded Polystyrene (or EPS), have long served as a cost- effective and indispensable packaging solution, but heightened scientific and cultural awareness regarding EPS’s environmental impact are bringing up conversations about how it needs to be replaced.

**Composting operations represented above represent commercial composting centers based on ASTM D6400 testing. Commercial composting centers may not exist in your area.

Bioffex® technology is certified as 100% bio-based under the USDA BioPreferred® program based on third party testing using ASTM D6866-20 Method B

As it’s being used, people who encounter packaging made from Bioffex® technology will realize all the benefits they enjoyed with EPS, but with reduced environmental impact^:

^ Reduces environmental impact through bio-based origins, commercial composting, and reduced water and GHG impact during manufacturing

At the end of its useful life, packaging products made with Bioffex® technology have a better end-of-life story than EPS:

Wetter or biologically active landfills may not exist in your area. The stated rate and extent of degradation does not mean the product will continue to decompose. Not for retail sale
